Lane Hartill is a researcher in the Africa division at Human Rights Watch, focusing on Burundi. He has also worked as researcher in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has investigated abuses by armed groups and state security forces, torture, and rape. Before joining Human Rights Watch, he worked at Save the Children and Catholic Relief Services. He also worked as a journalist for The Christian Science Monitor. He has worked for humanitarian agencies and as a journalist in Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan and throughout West Africa. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Linfield College in Oregon. He is bilingual in French and English.
