Joseph Saunders

Deputy Program Director

Joseph Saunders, deputy program director at Human Rights Watch, helps oversee the organization’s research and reporting. He joined Human Rights Watch in 1997 and had stints as a researcher and program director prior to taking on his senior management role. Saunders has worked on Indonesia for more than 30 years, and has addressed human rights conditions there in numerous reports, articles, and op-eds. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Saunders was a lawyer at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York. He has a bachelor’s degree in human biology from Stanford University, a master’s degree in anthropology from Cornell University, and a law degree from New York University.
