Tomiwa is a Senior Researcher in the Technology, Rights and Investigations Division. Before joining Human Rights Watch, he served as an Expert Consultant at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), where he advised on various tech and human rights initiatives. He was also a Senior Fellow in Information Controls with Open Technology Fund, hosted by HURIDOCS. Previously, Tomiwa was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Project Coordinator at the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. In that role, he led multiple research and advocacy initiatives on technology and human rights.

Over the past decade, he has worked with more than twenty organisations globally including civil society groups as a legal advisor, consultant, and researcher managing complex, novel and multi-country projects on digital rights and policy. He has authored several publications on digital rights, technology policy and human rights including peer-reviewed articles, policy briefs and research reports.

Tomiwa is a lawyer by training and holds a master’s and doctorate in law and human rights from the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria and a bachelor’s degree in law from the Obafemi Awolowo University.
