Europe suddenly finds itself on the brink of war. Russian troops have taken control of Crimea, Ukraine, following President Vladimir Putin receiving approval from his parliament for an invasion of the neighboring country. Ukraine sees this as an act of war, has its military on full alert and has mobilized reserves. At one flashpoint, elite Ukrainian troops at a base in Feodosia are in a very tense stand-off with Russians demanding they disarm. Moscow's moves have sparked worldwide outrage. US Secretary of State John Kerry called it,  “an incredible act of aggression,” and all of Russia's G8 partners have condemned it, suspended preparations for the group's upcoming summit in Sochi, and threatened to expel Moscow from the G8. Many fear eastern Ukraine is next in Russia's sights, in this, "the biggest crisis in Europe in the 21st century".
Spiraling violence continues in Nigeria, where the Islamist militant group Boko Haram has killed scores of people in new bombings at the weekend. Insurgents killed more than 300 people last month, mostly civilians. French President François Hollande during his visit in Nigeria issued a statement condemning "the terrorist attacks with the greatest possible rigour".
In the Central African Republic, ongoing, brutal attacks have brought not only deaths but also massive displacement...
Burma has backpedaled the expulsion of the Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders and allowed the organization to resume work, but not in the strife-torn state of Rakhine. MSF has been providing medical treatment to both ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, a mostly stateless minority who face extreme discrimination and who otherwise have little access to healthcare. Human Rights Watch has urged the Burmese government to investigate reports of sectarian killings
