In a major victory for same-sex marriage, the US Supreme Court ruled this morning that same-sex couples are entitled to receive federal benefits.These federal benefits will extend to all states where same-sex marriage is legal.

The Washington Post reports the news.
“The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and injure those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity,” Justice Kennedy wrote. “By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment.”
Tying in the "right to family unity," which also plays into the US debate on immigration policy.
By declining to rule on gay marriage in California, the Supreme Court effectively allows gay marriage there.
