How many people are killed by the police each year in the United States? Given the lack of readily available data, it’s hard to know.
This Sunday March 8 is International Women’s Day, a reminder of the responsibility governments have to offer programs to respond to and prevent gender-based violence and discrimination. These programs should also include women with disabilities, who are even more vulnerable to abuse.
Iran’s policy of banning women from football stadiums “intolerable,” declared Sepp Blatter, the president FIFA, the world football’s governing body. He has appealed to Iranian authorities to change it immediately. Iran bans all women from watching football, as well as other sporting events, in its stadiums, and last June jailed a woman who defied the ban.
As the US continues its withdrawal from Afghanistan, it is empowering local security forces to carry on the task of finding Taliban insurgents. But many of these groups have exhibited a pattern of violence and have committed other serious abuses.
