AFGHANISTAN

More than eight years after the United States and its allies went to war against the Taliban, the situation for Afghan women remains perilous. Human Rights Watch is urging Afghanistan's influential international supporters to insist that President Hamid Karzai amend laws that formalize discrimination against women.

Moises Saman works for The New York Times in Afghanistan. He has won numerous international prizes including several World Press Photo awards.

CHECHNYA

Serious human rights abuses persist in Chechnya, including torture, abduction, and extrajudicial executions. Human Rights Watch is calling on Russian authorities to bring perpetrators to justice for attacks on civilians and human rights defenders.

Stanley Greene made more than twenty trips to Chechnya and produced an unforgettable book chronicling what he witnessed, titled Open Wound: Chechnya 1994-2003. Human Rights Watch exhibited his work in New York and London.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

For hundreds of thousands of women and girls, the deadly war in Congo is especially hazardous. Sexual violence has become commonplace. This year, after Human Rights Watch met with Congolese President Joseph Kabila, the Congolese government announced “zero tolerance” for human rights

KASHMIR

Kashmiris are trapped in an armed conflict between Indian government forces and militant groups backed by the Pakistani government. Human Rights Watch is calling for accountability for abuses committed by both sides of the conflict.

Photographer Robert Nickelsberg joined Human Rights Watch on assignment in India's Jammu and Kashmir state. His work was published in our report Everyone Lives in Fear-Patterns of Impunity in Jammu and Kashmir.

DARFUR

Civilians in Sudan's Darfur region continue to face abuse and displacement.  Human Rights Watch is documenting the horrific crimes committed by government and militia forces and demanding that Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and others be held accountable. 

Photographer Gary Knight's work was featured extensively in the Human Rights Watch report on Darfur entitled Chaos by Design.

SOMALIA

Somalia is being ripped apart by a conflict in which all sides are committing war crimes. Rape, murders, looting, and indiscriminate bombings are common. Human Rights Watch is shining a spotlight on the human rights and humanitarian dimensions of the conflict, calling for accountability for the worst abuses and pressing for protection for Somali refugees.
