Some of the 360,000 Afghan refugees forced out of Pakistan in the second half of 2016 arrive at the UN refugee agency’s support center outside Kabul after an overnight journey. After living in Pakistan for decades, returning refugees hire trucks to transport their belongings back to Afghanistan. Refugees are returning to armed conflict and economic hardship and most have no homes or land awaiting them. © 2016 Hussain Sadat for Human Rights Watch

Afghan refugee women and their children arrive at the UN refugee agency’s support center outside Kabul after being forced out of Pakistan in October 2016. Pakistan’s threats and abuses drove out about 360,000 registered refugees and a further 200,000 undocumented Afghans between July and November. Most have no homes or land to go back to. © 2016 Hussain Sadat for Human Rights Watch
Five returning Afghan refugee children wait for their parents to register at the UN refugee agency’s support center outside Kabul after being forced out of Pakistan in October 2016. Almost 600,000 Afghans, including 360,000 registered refugees, returned home in the second half of 2016 to armed conflict and poverty. Half of all Afghan children are not enrolled in schools. © 2016 Hussain Sadat for Human Rights Watch
50-year-old Mohamad Alam waits to register at the UN refugee agency’s support center in Kabul, October 2016. After living in Pakistan for 32 years, he was forced out by the government’s deportation threats and crippling daily police extortion, leaving him no option but to return to his conflict-ridden home area in Kunduz Province. © 2016 Hussain Sadat for Human Rights Watch
