Human Rights Watch mourns the death of our friend and colleague Daniel S. Lev, a political scientist and a longtime and valuable member of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division advisory committee.
Lev died on July 29 after a battle with lung cancer, leaving behind his wife and two children. He was 72.
Lev, a retired University of Washington professor, spent decades researching the Indonesian legal system and political conflict in Indonesia and became an authoritative commentator on the country. But he was more than an academic; he was passionate about the country and its people. Beginning in the early 1950s, he collaborated with scholars, journalists, reformers, and politicians to further the cause of human rights in Southeast Asia.
Dan Lev’s knowledge of Indonesia was surpassed only by his willingness to assist others, particularly the many Indonesians who came to know him. We will miss him.
