"Wars, other violence and persecution drove worldwide forced displacement to a new high in 2017, for the fifth year in a row, led by the crisis in Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan’s war, and the flight into Bangladesh from Myanmar of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees. Overwhelmingly, it is developing countries that are most affected", says the UN Refugees Agency in its annual Global Trends report, published today.

Attacks by armed groups in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado have killed at least 39 people and displaced more than 1,000 since last month. Hundreds of families fled their villages after suspected members of an armed Islamist group burned down their houses during nighttime attacks.

The authorities in Iran have executed Mohammad Sallas, a member of the Dervish religious minority, despite serious allegations of torture and a rushed, unfair trial.

Prayuth is also visiting France this week, where he will meet President Emmanuel Macron.
