(Moscow) – The fatal bombing that occurred in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, on May 3, 2012, is an abominable crime for which there is no justification, Human Rights Watch said today.

On the evening of May 3, two cars carrying alleged suicide bombers exploded next to a police road block in Makhachkala. The first car exploded at about 10:25 p.m. and the second approximately 15 minutes later, after medical workers had arrived and were providing emergency treatment to the wounded. According to Russia’s Ministry for Emergencies, 13 people were killed and over 100 were wounded. The victims include both police officials and civilians.

“Terrorism is a repudiation of human rights,” said Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Everyone responsible for this blatant and cynical attack on Dagestan’s residents should be brought to justice. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims and hope for a swift recovery for the wounded.”

The authorities are trying to identify the bombers from their remains and searching for possible accomplices. Those behind the bombings should be brought to justice in full accordance with international human rights standards, Human Rights Watch said.
