Tanya Lokshina
Lokshina joined Human Rights Watch in January 2008. She authored a range of reports on violations of international humanitarian law in context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. She also covered Russia’s war against Georgia and the armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. Lokshina extensively reported on egregious human rights abuses in Chechnya and other regions of the Northern Caucasus and covered the vicious crackdowns on critics of the government and peaceful protesters in Russia and Belarus. She is a recipient of the 2006 Andrei Sakharov Award, “Journalism as an Act of Conscience.” Her articles have been featured in prominent media outlets, including The Guardian, Le Monde, The Moscow Times, Novaya Gazeta, and The Washington Post. Lokshina’s books include Chechnya Inside Out and Imposition of a Fake Political Settlement in the Northern Caucasus. Her research on the abusive virtue campaign against women in Chechnya was published in Chechnya at War and Beyond (Routledge Contemporary Russia and Eastern Europe Series).
