In 2026, Bahraini authorities arbitrarily arrested dozens of people for exercising their right to freedom of expression amidst the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran. In March, Mohammed Almosawi, a 32-year-old man, died in custody after being forcibly disappeared for more than a week, and his body bore signs of torture. In April, authorities stripped 67 people of citizenship, rendering the majority of them, mostly children, stateless. Despite the latest granted amenities in December 2025 to 963 prisoners, human rights defenders and political leaders, including Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, Hassan Mushaima, Dr. Abduljalil al-Singace, and Sheikh Ali Salman, have all remained arbitrarily detained. Twelve death row inmates remain at imminent risk of execution.
