Since Mohamed Muizzu became president in 2023, his government has tightened media control through new laws and used the Freedom of Assembly Act to block protests and restrict journalists. Through an amendment to the Drug Act, the government introduced the death penalty for drug trafficking, despite a de facto moratorium on its use since 1954.

Migrant workers in Maldives—who are one-third of the population—face a range of abuses from employers, including deceptive recruitment practices, wage theft, and unsafe living and working conditions. 

The Maldives continues to criminalize consensual same-sex sexual conduct, punishable by up to eight years’ imprisonment. Extremist Islamist groups have used social media to harass and threaten those who promote the rights of LGBT people, women, and other “secular” issues.

Authorities do not adequately enforce environmental protection laws, prioritizing development projects over the rights of local communities.
