Milosevic Transferred to War Crimes Tribunal

On June 28, Serbian authorities transferred Slobodan Milosevic, the former president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to The Hague to stand trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Human Rights Watch played a pivotal role in gathering evidence of atrocities committed in the Balkans during Milosevic's thirteen-year rule, and in bringing international pressure to indict, arrest and try those most culpable for these horrendous crimes. In fact, Human Rights Watch conducted primary research and provided crucial evidence for six of the seven episodes of mass murder upon which the Milosevic indictment is based. We expect that further charges will be filed against Milosevic for his role in earlier atrocities outside of Kosovo, such as the slaughters in Vukovar and Srebrenica, which Human Rights Watch has also investigated and reported on.
