The US National Guard has
been deployed to Ferguson, Missouri, where protests continue to roil after
police shot to death an unarmed 18-year-old African American, Michael Brown. In the words of Human Rights Watch researcher
Alba Morales, on the ground in Ferguson: "Last night’s police actions [against demonstrators] took me and many of the protesters I spoke to by surprise, not only because they happened well before the curfew, but because while the crowd I saw was angry, it also
seemed peaceful."
Kudish and Iraqi forces said they had retaken the
Mosul dam from Islamic State (IS) fighters, the US said. However,
IS claims to retain control.
There is strong evidence that
Kenya’s Anti-Terrorism Police Unit has
carried out a series of
extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. Evidence also indicates the forces have made arbitrary arrests and mistreated terrorism suspects in detention.
In early August, a large
group of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempted to enter Spain by scaling a
six-meter high triple fence that separates Morocco from the Spanish enclave of
Melilla. They were met by officers on the Spanish side who beat them with
batons; some had
to be hospitalized. While Spain’s right to secure its borders doesn’t give
it carte blanche to abuse migrants.
