Human Rights Watch Action on Turkish Prison Crisis

Open Letter to Foreign Ministers Lindh and Michel, European Commissioner Verheugen and High Representative Solana

I am sure that you are aware of the deepening crisis in the Turkish prison system which has been provoked by the imposition of small-group isolation on prisoners held in the new F-type high security prisons. Over the past three weeks twelve hunger striking prisoners and two hunger striking relatives of prisoners have died. At least two hundred other prisoners are continuing their death fast, and a representative of the Istanbul branch of the Turkish Medical Association has stated that as many as ninety prisoners are now in a moribund condition.
