Demonstrations by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend descended into violent clashes and the death of one peaceful counter-protester, 32-year-old Heather Heyer, after a car slammed into a street packed with anti-racism marchers. The man charged in the attack was apparently a Nazi sympathizer, and the US Justice Department is opening a civil rights investigation into the killing as a possible hate crime. There was widespread condemnation of the attack across the political spectrum, but President Donald Trump refused to condemn white supremacists specifically, instead blaming "many sides," a statement that has shocked many but drew praise from American Nazis.
