(New York, July 7, 2005) —The bomb attacks in London today were an assault on the fundamental principle of respect for civilian life, and those responsible for this atrocity must be apprehended and brought to justice, Human Rights Watch said today.

At least four explosions occurred in London this morning, targeting underground trains and at least one passenger bus. At least 33 people were killed, and the numbers of wounded are believed to be in the hundreds.

Yet again, the logic of terrorism—that the ends justify the means—has resulted in the deliberate death and injury of innocent people. This logic is contrary to the most elementary values of humanity. There is no justification for acts that assault the right to life.

“No political cause can legitimize this assault on innocent people,” said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. “Whatever ends might have been sought by this atrocity, they cannot justify this inhuman means.”

Human Rights Watch offers its condolences to the victims of the bombings, their loved ones and to the people of Britain.
