Meanwhile, authorities’ gross rights violations have continued long after the protests. At least two men were executed and several others sentenced to death in connection with the protests. The authorities have also continued to enforce discriminatory and degrading compulsory hijab laws and policies, which had led to Mahsa Amini’s death in custody on September 16, 2022. Many survivors of violent government crackdowns on protests have had to leave Iran because of threats of arrest, torture, and criminal prosecutions. But despite the risks and personal costs, and in the face of long-standing repression and abuse, many Iranian women told Human Rights Watch they will continue doing what they have done since long before the Women, Life, Freedom protests: demand their rights and call for justice. |
