For over 35 years, Human Rights Watch has been at the forefront of the international human rights movement, investigating human rights abuses and exposing the truth to create deep-rooted change.
The Voices for Justice Annual Dinner honors courageous individuals who protect and defend human rights around the world. Please join us as we celebrate some of the most important human rights achievements of the past year and present the prestigious Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism to Shin Dong-Hyuk of North Korea and Dr. M.R. Rajagopal of India.
Shin Dong-Hyuk is the world’s leading advocate for closing North Korea’s forced labor camps. Born into Camp 14, one of North Korea’s camps for political prisoners, Shin was beaten, tortured, and routinely starved. The only known escapee of the camp, he has since worked tirelessly to expose and end the country’s atrocities.
Dr. M. R. Rajagopal is a leading palliative care physician from India who, for more than 20 years, has battled conditions that cause patients to suffer severe pain unnecessarily. Dr. Rajagopal is a global force behind efforts to promote and put into practice palliative care as a human right.
