  • The Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) philosophy explores ways to help young people develop the attitudes and skills they need to lead productive and law-abiding lives. BARJ maintains an appropriate focus on public safety while promoting strategies that encourage youthful offenders to face the consequences of their actions by restoring individual victims and the communities they have harmed. This approach also recognizes the importance of harnessing the power of the community to complement the formal juvenile justice system. Michigan is one of the states chosen by OJJDP to demonstrate how to integrate BARJ into all aspects of the juvenile justice system. The Balanced and Restorative Justice in Michigan Web site offers information and advice on implementing, sustaining, and evaluating BARJ.
