New York Network

About the Network

Mission. The New York Network provides an opportunity for people in their 20s and 30s to learn about human rights issues, and to increase awareness of and support for the work of Human Rights Watch.

Commitment. Network members are expected to attend quarterly meetings and the Network’s annual flagship event, stay informed on human rights issues, participate in fundraising and other outreach activities, make an annual contribution, and promote awareness of Human Rights Watch. Each member is asked to join one or more working groups focusing on outreach and membership, philanthropy, or events.

Benefits. Benefits include: affiliation with one of the premier human rights organizations in the world; invitations to Human Rights Watch briefings with human rights activists and researchers; receiving regular updates on Human Rights Watch's work and impact; and participation in social events and activities with people from all backgrounds who share a commitment to human rights.

Friends of the New York Network

If you are interested in the goals of the Network, but unable to commit fully to the requirements of membership, you are welcome to join the “Friends of the New York Network.” Friends receive updates on the Network and Human Rights Watch and invitations to selected events.

Event at Moustache Restaurant- 1/29/2009

On January 29, 2009, the New York Network and Friends of the New York Network gathered at Moustache Restaurant on 102nd and Lex. Over 130 guests attended & more than $5,500 was raised. The space, drink and delicious food was generously donated by Salam Al-Rawi, Moustache Owner and New York Committee member.

Counterterrorism & the Obama Administration- 2/26/2009

On February 26, 2009, the New York Network and Friends of the New York Network participated in a discussion led by Human Rights Watch's Minky Worden, Media Director, and Stacy Sullivan, Counterterrorism Advisor. Minky and Stacy discussed human rights abuses at Guantanamo, rendition, and the human rights strengths and weaknesses in the Obama Administration's current counterterrorism policy.
