In this week’s most shared tweets: Athletes from around the world, including Team Refugee, started competing in the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this week. HRW takes a look at a part of Rio most viewers won’t see on TV, impunity and corruption in the city’s police force. However, the Olympics also brought some heartwarming moments to a world pocked with strife, from a selfie of a North and South Korean athlete that went viral, to a US athlete who rose above Islamophobia in her home country and medaled, to an Egyptian woman who competed proudly in the beach volleyball competition in the attire of her choice.

Also, Turkey’s purge continued and rights groups fought back; as Saudi Arabia condemned bombing in Syria, it should look at its own record in Yemen; and a Human Rights Watch researcher has been barred from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
