Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has consolidated political and economic power, including as chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), a sovereign wealth fund that has facilitated and benefited from rights abuses. PIF investments in high-profile sports and entertainment events domestically and internationally are used to whitewash the country’s abysmal human rights record. Migrant workers, including on PIF-linked projects and companies, face widespread abuses across employment sectors and geographic regions under the kafala (sponsorship) system, despite much-touted labor reforms. Saudi Arabian authorities harshly repress any dissent, including by handing down long sentences or the death penalty after unfair trials on charges related to peaceful online expression. Saudi authorities carried out an unprecedented surge in executions after trials that were likely unfair, executing at least 322 individuals as of early December 2025, which exceeded prior execution records.
