(New York, May 16, 2006) – Human Rights Watch mourns the death of its Tunisian colleague Adel Arfaoui, 45, a teacher and long-time human rights activist. Arfaoui died unexpectedly on May 11, leaving behind his wife and five children.

Adel joined the independent Tunisian League for Human Rights in 1984 and later became president of the section in Jendouba, his home town. Since 2000 he served on the League’s executive committee. Adel was also a founding member of the National Council on Liberties in Tunisia, another independent rights organization.

Behind Adel’s low-key demeanor was a thoroughly reliable colleague, a gentle person devoted to the idea that letting the facts speak for themselves is the best way to advance human rights. We will miss him.
