Florida’s state government is passing restrictive laws targeting women and LGBT people.

We spoke to activists on the front lines in Florida to get their perspective and learn how they’re resisting.

Florida has a long history of incarcerating folks, especially people of color, LGBTQ folks and LGBTQ folks of color. folks who historically have been oppressed, historically have been pushed out into systems, have historically been pushed into systems that make it difficult for them to not only survive, but also thrive.

And so we see that here in the United States that LGBTQ folks are three times as likely to be incarcerated.

Not only are they facing higher risk of suicide, they're facing higher risks of being harassed and sexually assaulted while incarcerated.

There is still a lot of transphobia against people trans experience, but there's also a lot of laws to make it easier for people to harass, discriminate and incarcerate people with trans experience.

I am born and raised in the Miami Dade County Bar from a single parent and my background is, ah, my identities are that I am queer, I identify as black and I also on both sides come from Caribbean backgrounds.

I have family members who have been arrested by my own eyes and personally have had experiences with police officers that were really negative. And so every day my is I bring my real-life experiences and to this work because it’s important to me.
