YES! In a historic referendum, Ecuadorians voted to protect the heart of Yasuni National Park in the Amazon rainforest.
It is the first time a national referendum will halt new and existing fossil fuel operations.
The referendum is the result of decades of work by a coalition of Ecuadorian Indigenous, youth, and other activists.
Oil operations have resulted in deforestation, pollution, and repression of Indigenous peoples.
The government should now take immediate action to respect the will of the people to keep the oil in the soil in Yasuni.
Other countries should follow Ecuador’s example to phase out fossil fuels and protect forests and forest people.
