Stephen L. Kass
Stephen L. Kass is a partner and co-director and founder of the Environmental Practice Group at Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP in New York and is special counsel to HRW’s Africa Division. He received his B.A. from Yale in 1961 and his L.L.B. from Harvard in 1964. He served on HRW’s Board of Directors from 1985-2005 (Chair, Policy Committee; Chair, Americas Advisory Committee) and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; the Americas Society; the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (former Vice President and past Chair of the Association’s Committees on Consumer Affairs, Inter-American Affairs, Council on International Affairs, Special Committee on International Environmental Law, Committee on Social Welfare Law, Nominating Committee, and Special Task Force on Downtown Redevelopment); New York State Bar Association and American Bar Association and since 1986 has served on, and for 10 years chaired, the Board of Directors of the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (formerly the Welfare Law Center). Mr. Kass is an Adjunct Professor of International Environmental Law at Brooklyn Law School, has written numerous articles in the environmental field and has written a regular column on Environmental Law in the New York Law Journal since 1986.
