Alex Müller

Director, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program

Alex Müller is the Director of the LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch. Before joining Human Rights Watch, she worked at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and the Charité Center for Global Health in Germany, overseeing and conducting research to support evidence-based advocacy for sexual orientation and gender identity-related rights.

Alex’s research is widely published and has shaped policy and service delivery for LGBT populations across Southern Africa. Alex has provided expert evidence in several strategic litigation cases. Her expert evidence contributed significantly to the success of the case that decriminalized same-sex sexuality in Botswana in 2019. She has advised, among others, WHO, UNDP and the World Bank, and worked closely with civil society organizations across Eastern and Southern Africa.

As a trained physician, Alex holds a medical degree from the University of Göttingen and has practiced in Germany and South Africa. She is an honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town’s Gender Health and Justice Research Unit.
