Le Conseil de sécurité de l’ONU devrait agir face à la crise au Myanmar

L'inaction permettrait la poursuite d’abus contre les Rohingyas vulnérables

(New York, le 12 décembre 2017) - Le Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies devrait agir de manière rapide, concertée et efficace face à la crise des Rohingyas au Myanmar, ont plaidé aujourd’hui Human Rights Watch et 80 autres organisations non gouvernementales dans un appel adressé conjointement au Conseil.

Le Secrétaire général adjoint aux affaires politiques de l'ONU, Jeffrey Feltman, et la Représentante spéciale chargée de la question des violences sexuelles en période de conflit, Pramila Patten, devraient présenter au Conseil de sécurité – composé de 15 États membres – de récentes informations sur cette crise à l’occasion d’une réunion prévue le 12 décembre 2017.

Les 81 organisations signataires du courrier ont déclaré dans leur appel lancé conjointement : « Les simples condamnations n'ont suffi à inciter le gouvernement du Myanmar à mettre un terme aux abus ou à traduire les responsables en justice. » Qualifiant les atrocités commises par les forces de sécurité birmanes à l’encontre de la minorité ethnique Rohingya de « crimes contre l'humanité », la coalition a exhorté le Conseil de sécurité à examiner toutes les voies possibles afin d’obtenir la justice et la reddition de comptes, y compris par le biais des tribunaux internationaux.

La coalition a également appelé le Conseil de sécurité à imposer un embargo sur les armes à destination de Myanmar, ainsi que des sanctions ciblées contre les officiers militaires responsables de crimes contre l'humanité et d'autres violations graves des droits humains.

« Si la promesse de ne "plus jamais" permettre des atrocités a encore un sens, alors le Conseil de sécurité devrait agir sans plus tarder », a ajouté la coalition.
