China's ContradictionsAround the world, people leave their homes every day in order to seek employment or to flee instability. More than 215 million live outside their country of birth. They may be hoping for freedom or economic gain, but they often leave home at great personal and financial cost. Men, women, and children risk their lives to cross borders. Migrant workers are especially vulnerable. They are concentrated in low-paying, poorly-regulated sectors such as agriculture, construction, and domestic work.
