(New York) – Human Rights Watch today issued guidelines for journalists and others to describe migrants who enter a country without legal permission or status. The guidelines reflect extensive discussion and research into the subject by Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and other organizations that deal with migrants, as well as by major news organizations.

“Migrants are very much in the news, and using accepted terminology can help reporters and others tell their story in the most accurate and objective way,” said Bill Frelick, refugee program director. “We hope these guidelines will be helpful to reporters and contribute to the discussion of the subject.”
