Human
Rights Watch Annual Dinners 2006
Voices for Justice
The Human Rights Watch Annual Dinner, Voices for Justice, celebrates individuals who risk their lives to protect the dignity and rights of others. We collaborate with these
courageous human rights defenders to create a world free of violence, discrimination, and oppression.
This year in North America, Human Rights Watch honors three activists: Mandira Sharma,
who exposes "disappearances" and indiscriminate attacks against civilians
in Nepal; Verónica Cruz, who fights for the right of rape victims to receive
the safe abortion they are entitled to under Mexican law; and Arnold Tsunga, who takes legal action against the forced displacement of hundreds of
thousands of people in Zimbabwe.
In Europe, Human Rights Watch honours three activists: Salih Mahmoud Osman, a lawyer from thr Darfur region of Sudan who for twenty years has defended people arbitrarily detained and tortured by the Sudanese government; Omid Memarian, a journalist and weblogger working to create a more open and democratic civil and political society in Iran; and Beatrice Were, an ardent activist exposing and improving the plight of women and children living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
