South Sudan: Heed Global Call to End Death Penalty

South Sudan should carry out its commitment for a moratorium on the death penalty. On December 20, 2012, South Sudan, along with 110 other nations, voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling on countries that use capital punishment to place a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty.

Nevertheless, human rights violations continue and efforts to implement a United Nations-facilitated blueprint for the two-year political transition period have at times met with violent resistance from supporters of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Human Rights Watch also welcomes the report of the OHCHR on South Sudan. As a new nation-state, the country has faced a number of human rights challenges.
South Sudan: End Abuses by Disarmament Forces in Jonglei

South Sudan’s military should take concrete steps to end human rights violations by soldiers carrying out a civilian disarmament operation in Jonglei state and to punish those responsible for offenses, Human Rights Watch said today in a letter to President Salva Kiir. Human Rights Watch also urged the president to promptly swear in the members of the committee created in March 2012 to investigate inter-communal violence in Jonglei state, and ensure it had the necessary funding.

Africa: Clinton Should Urge Leaders to Address Abuse
