    From October 20 to 23, Human Rights Watch and the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Dungu (CDJP) hosted a four-day workshop in Dungu, northern Democratic Republic of Congo, to consider the continued threat to civilians by the Ugandan rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

  • Obama Sends Military Support to Help Combat LRA Rebels

    Last week the Obama administration said it would send 100 US military advisers to central Africa to help the region’s armies combat the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a vicious Ugandan rebel group. Human Rights Watch has pressed the US government to help bring the LRA’s murderous leadership to justice, even appealing directly to President Barack Obama.

    The United States government should step up efforts to protect civilians in central Africa from abuses by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a coalition of 39 human rights and humanitarian organizations said today. The organizations urged the Obama administration to appoint a special envoy for the African Great Lakes region with a mandate extending to LRA-affected areas, to support stronger United Nations peacekeeping and to intensify efforts to arrest three LRA leaders being sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
