  • Russia: Letter regarding the possible extradition of Yusup Kasymakhunov
    We are writing to you today in relation to the case of Yusup Kasymakhunov, an Uzbek national, who is currently in the process of appealing the decision of the Prosecutor General’s office from 19 of April 2012 to extradite Mr. Kasymakhunov to Uzbekistan. The appeal hearing is scheduled for May 18, 2012 at the Murmansk District Court.

  • Letter to the European Court of Human Rights Regarding the Selection Procedure for Candidates from the Russian Federation
    We write to express concern about serious deficiencies in the selection procedure used to select candidates from the Russian Federation for election to the European Court of Human Rights. We believe the procedure used falls far short of the most recent set of Guidelines adopted by the Committee of Ministers on the selection of candidates for the post of judge at the European Court of Human Rights (CM(2012)40 final), adopted on March 29, 2012.

  • Letter to Rosoboronexport on Syrian Weapons Supplies

    On April 6, 2012, Human Rights Watch wrote to the Russian arms supplier Rosoboronexport to urge the company to halt all weapons deliveries to the government of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. In view of the overwhelming evidence that the Syrian army is committing crimes against humanity, Rosoboronexport’s arms dealings with the Syrian government place the company at a high risk of complicity in such crimes in violation of international law.
