Deputy Program Director
Joseph Saunders is deputy program director at Human Rights Watch, where he helps oversee all of the organization's program work. Apart from a brief period at the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs, he has worked the past 14 years at Human Rights Watch, including stints as a researcher and program director in addition to his current senior management role. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Saunders was a lawyer at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York. He has worked on Indonesia for more than 25 years, and has addressed human rights in Indonesia in numerous reports, articles, and op-eds. He has a bachelor’s degree in human biology from Stanford University, a master’s in anthropology from Cornell University, and a law degree from New York University.
