Letter to Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus regarding the harsh sentencing of youth activists
We are writing to express our profound concern about the recent arrests and disproportionate sentences of 10 youth activists for participating in a peaceful, but unsanctioned, protest on January 10, 2008. We are especially concerned about Andrei Kim, who is among these ten and who was arrested at a subsequent peaceful protest on January 21. He was charged with violations related to both protests and received a disproportionately harsh sentence for offences based on what we believe to be political reasons.

Election Marred by Closed Slates in Three Regions
The United Nations General Assembly rejected Belarus’ bid for a seat on the Human Rights Council today, upholding the principle that the human rights records of council members do matter, Human Rights Watch said today. Despite the Belarus defeat, today’s election was marred by a lack of competition within three of the five UN regional groups, which only put up as many candidates as there were seats available.

Belarus’ Pledges: Fiction and Fact
Analysis of Belarus’ Assertions on its Suitability for UN Rights Council Membership
General Assembly resolution 60/251 requires that states “take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights and their voluntary pledges and commitments made thereto” in voting to elect members of the Human Rights Council (HRC). While Belarus has submitted numerous pledges in advance of the upcoming HRC elections, the commitments made by Belarus are flatly contradicted by the findings of the UN itself and other institutions.
