The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo should urgently carry out new recommendations from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to protect children from violence and abuse.

The new Kenyan National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan should address rights abuses that make children vulnerable to HIV infection and impede access to care, Human Rights Watch said today in a policy proposal submitted to the government.

Many children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS face stigma and discrimination that prevent them from going to school or obtaining health care. Street children, children in conflict with the law, and orphans and abandoned children are especially vulnerable to neglect and abuse, including violence perpetrated by the police. Too often governments fail to protect their rights. The Children’s Rights Division works to raise public awareness of the devastating effect HIV/AIDS has had on children around the world, and to stimulate national and international organizations to take steps to reduce the suffering they are experiencing.
