President Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania’s first female president in March 19, 2021 and despite some measures to improve the country’s human rights record, the police continued to commit abuses with impunity and target critics of the government. Supporters and members of the country’s main opposition party have been subject to arbitrary arrest as Tanzania prepares for local elections in 2024 and general elections in 2025. Ongoing conservation and tourism activities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) violate the rights of the Maasai people. The Maasai are being forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands in the NCA without the Indigenous community’s free, prior, and informed consent.
