Syria: Caesar photographs-ch
In the “Caesar” photographs, a white card or paper on each body indicated the security branch number, detainee number (assigned by the security branch), and medical examination number (assigned by a forensic doctor after death). © 2013 “Caesar” collection
A medical report smuggled out by Caesar outlines the procedure after detainees’ bodies were removed from security branches. The report states: “based on the order of the military general prosecutor, photograph the bodies of detainees 2614, b-2615, b-2616, b-2617, b-2618, b-2619, b-2620, b-2621, b-2622, b-2623, b-2624, prisoners under the responsibility of the security services, unit 215, in the morgue of Military Hospital 601 on May 24, 2013, based on these orders.” © 2013 “Caesar” collection

A note from the head of the 227 Branch to the Military Police informing them about the death of a detainee: during the investigation with [DETAINEE], his health conditions declined and he was given emergency treatment in the 601 Military Hospital. On June 2, 2013, the [DETAINEE] died after his heart and breathing stopped. He was placed in the morgue refrigerator, with the number “2030.” Please bury his corpse…in coordination with the Burial Office in accordance with the written [DECISION] of the National Security Office. According to a conscript who defected after more than two years serving at the 601 Military Hospital, as the number of bodies that arrived at the hospital increased, the hospital ran out of rooms in the morgue’s refrigerated compartments, and began storing the bodies in a garage where army vehicles were sent for repair. © 2013 “Caesar” collection
