Chelsea Manning was freed from military prison today. Manning, who was jailed for 35 years for disclosing secret files to Wikileaks, was pardoned by President Barack Obama. It's a good reminder that whistleblowers need protection. And today being the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, it's also a good time to remember that transgender inmates remain at risk around the world.

Anti-LGBT acts are on the rise in France. A recent study found a 20% increase in reports of these incidents in 2016 compared to the year before. The majority of the French population is supportive of LGBT rights, but opponents are an increasingly vocal minority.
General Abdul Raziq, the Afghan National Police chief for the southern city of Kandahar, has become synonymous with systematic torture, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances. The United Nations Committee against Torture has singled out his horrific crimes, and wants answers. Afghanistan should oblige and act to end torture.
From earlier today: Turkey's President Erdogan has visited the White House to meet US President Donald Trump, where the two men may have found common ground as leaders "with little interest in oversight or checks on power", HRW says.
Meanwhile there were incredible scenes in Washington during the visit, when violence broke out between President Erdogan's bodyguards and protesters holding flags and placards.
In related news, it's been announced that Sudan’s president, wanted for crimes including genocide, has been invited to a summit in Saudi Arabia alongside President Trump. It's not clear whether the two leaders will meet.
