The Women's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch supports Iranian women activists and feminists in their call for freedom and equality. For over three decades, Iranian women have resisted gender discrimination and been at the forefront on the struggle for gender equality. Women activists have initiated various campaigns, such as the One Million Signature Campaign, to raise awareness about Iran's discriminatory laws against women. These efforts have been met with harassment and intimidation, travel bans, and imprisonment.
In June 2009, the dispute over Iran's presidential elections resulted in mass protests led by men and women activists, students, and professionals. Thousands have been arrested and many women's rights activists are currently in prison.
On March 8, 2010, Human Rights Watch dedicates International Women's Day to the struggle for gender equality around the world and supports the Iranian women's rights movement in their call for equality and freedom from discrimination and repression.
