People with Disabilities and Older People in Climate-Related Disasters
COP27, to be held in November 2022 in Egypt, is the annual UN climate conference where governments, experts, journalists, businesses, civil society and Indigenous peoples will discuss climate action to enable countries to collectively meet the target of keeping the global rise of temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, thereby avoiding the worst consequences of the climate crisis. Under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s government Egypt has experienced one of its worst human rights crises in many decades and the government has also severely curtailed environmental groups’ ability to carry out independent work. Unless these restrictions are lifted, they could hinder the full and meaningful participation of observers and activists at COP27.
