Civilians in Syria suffered terribly in 2016, particularly in the besieged city of Aleppo whose doctors, nurses, and civilians broadcast the carnage to the world in real time. Animated videos were a powerful medium to demonstrate the absurdity of male guardianship laws in Saudi Arabia. This year’s tweets also captured the Rio Olympic Games, ISIS atrocities, the death of Fidel Castro, crimes against the Rohingya in Burma, and a refugee crisis the world responded to with more obstacles and walls than compassion and refuge.
