"The keys to my freedom"

This is the story of Ivanna and Kaheli, two transgender women from Guanajuato, Mexico, who have battled against Guanajuatos legislation for an easy path to gender recognition.

Each of Mexico's 32 states sets its own rules for issuing civil documents, such as birth and marriage certificates. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that trans people should be able to modify the legal name and gender in their birth certificates through a simple, administrative procedure.Twenty-one Mexican states comply with the ruling and allow legal gender recognition for trans people. Guanajuato does not.
