Bangladeshis were denied yet another credible election in 2024, as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration returned to office for a fourth consecutive term without proper opposition representation in parliament. The abusive Rapid Action Battalion is under sanctions by the United States government, but security forces remain implicated in torture, killings, and enforced disappearances. The government arrested journalists and critics, and stifled civil society.

While Bangladesh hosts a million Rohingya from Myanmar, the refugees endure repressive measures by government and attacks by militant groups. Workers demanding safety and wage hikes face harassment. Women and girls remain at risk of violence and sexual assault.
