Tensions around Ukraine remain high several days into the crisis sparked by Russia's military push into the Ukrainian region of Crimea. US Secretary of State John Kerry said his initial meeting today with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was “tough,” and pledged to continue the talks. 
The UN's special envoy to the Crimea was threatened by pro-Russian gunmen and subsequently left the region. 
Clashes and protests continued in Donetsk.

In the midst of the crisis, the US military said it will provide more support to Poland and the Baltic countries... 

...and NATO announced that it is reviewing its military ties with Russia and that it will strengthening its partnership with Ukraine. 
Member states of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have agreed to participate in a military observer mission in Ukraine. 
Not entirely distracted by the crisis in Ukraine, Russia's abuses at home continue. 
The United Nations this week proposed a nearly 12,000-member peacekeeping force for the violence-torn Central African RepublicThousands of Christians and Muslims have been displaced after fleeing violence. Those fleeing the crisis are short of food and shelter, and their already-precarious situation may soon deteriorate, Amnesty International says.

The Egypt court trial of three Al Jazeera journalists was adjourned until March. The journalists, already detained for two months, will remain in jail. Facing politicized charges such as disseminating “false information” and belonging to a “terrorist organization,” the journalists seem only guilty of simply doing their jobs as journalists.
