The country has faced numerous crises, including a Russia-supported insurgency in the east. Under pressure, Ukraine’s president dissolved parliament today and called for elections in late October.

Rebel forces in Donetsk decided to mark Ukrainian Independence Day last weekend with a blatant violation of the laws of war – they paraded several dozen captured soldiers, their hands tied behind their backs, through the streets among crowds shouting “fascists” and other insults. Behind the parade, three cleaning trucks “cleanse” the streets where the detainees just walked.

Keeping with Ukraine, many people are waiting to confirm that a loved ones were “arrested” by rebel forces.

Across India, people from some communities that are considered low-caste “untouchables” are expected to collect and dispose of their village’s human excrement. They face significant barriers to leaving this role, including those imposed by local government officials, a new Human Rights Watch report shows. Women from this caste usually clean dry toilets in homes, while men do the more physically demanding cleaning of sewers and septic tanks.

An inspiration to others forced to clean human waste, Lalibai liberated herself and scores of other women from this degrading work.
